Have you ever been cued in to ‘ TAKE CROW if it’s in your practice AND if it’s NOT then just breathe in Child’s pose?’ Which frequently results in most of the room looking around frantically trying to work out how on earth to do Crow pose 😂. This is why we think this is a poor teaching cue - it doesn’t help students to learn how to do Crow pose at all. At Wellness Connection Yoga we love working out progressive ways of teaching Crow - easier versions to Crow itself - building the strength and skill needed to do these complex poses so that everyone in the class can experience their version of it. Stepping from 3-Legged Dog to Lunge is a frequent Stepping from 3-Legged Dog to Lunge is a frequent transition in Vinyasa - but it’s (deceptively!) not the easiest. Something as simple as knowing that there are options to either cup the hand to create a bit more space or lift the hand out of the way completely can make a big difference in this movement. Give these options a go, or let us know your solutions in the comments.

The bolster slightly changes the shape/sensation of your Crow, but encourages the ‘squeeze’ action of knees towards the arms and also the shelf shape of the arms to keep the bolster in place. Pilates is a great complimentary practice to Yoga, and sneaking a few Pilates moves can be a fun, creative way to add strength work or just different types of movement to your sequences. These side reaches and articulations add some work for the obliques and feel really nice - give them a go! Great additions for sequences prepping for Side Plank variations. PS. We love complex and challenging poses, but so ofte We love complex and challenging poses, but so often, we only see the perfect finished article on social media (even in helpful tutorials and how-tos). Firefly has been Amy’s ‘nemesis’ pose FOREVER. Though flexible and strong enough to do the pose, it just wasn’t coming! So together, we worked on the skills required for Firefly (leaning back and looking forward, hand placement, leg placement, squeezing legs to the upper arms etc.), and played with props - a strap to feel the compression of the legs to the body, and blocks to bring the floor a little higher. And it was the blocks that cracked it! Revisiting skills, trying different things, adding props and FAILING A LOT FIRST (but not giving up!) all helped to get there in the end.

The Flamingo rocks will help you to find momentum and the lean, the wall can help you to find your balance, and putting blocks underneath your hands will bring the floor a little closer. Here’s a Crow Pose megamix at the wall with lots of Crow variations! If you’re still building up to holding a classic Crow, the option of leaning the top of your head to the wall is a fun one to try - the support of the wall can mitigate a little of the fear-factor we can feel when leaning forward into the pose. Start in chair pose, and press the top of your head against a bolster at the wall for feedback as you jump forwards. You can then try with the hands close to the mat - which gives a little less momentum. Give them a go and let us know how you get on.

If you’re working on One Legged Crow, but strugg If you’re working on One Legged Crow, but struggling to lift the back leg, these tips might help! Start with the back leg in an elevated position - put the back foot on a chair or block, and start from there. This recreates the shape of the final pose, and (especially the chair version) reduces the amount of ‘lift’ required in the back leg.
